ST Flannan’s School, Zillmere, embraced ABC Radio’s “Marching into Africa” appeal for shoes for Zambian orphans during Lent.
Assistant principal religious education at St Flannan’s Kelly Phillips said that when the school heard about the appeal it immediately asked for donations.
“Our theme for Lent this year (was) walking in the footsteps of Jesus and each class was given a Station of the Cross and had to use their collected shoes as a sculpture for that station,” Ms Phillips said.
She said the school’s 13 classes from Prep to Year 7 designed the 14 stations in different and imaginative ways.
“The creativity of the stations was fantastic and the exercise gave the students the opportunity to really investigate the story behind each station,” she said.
Ms Phillips said following the Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday, the shoes collected – about 150 pairs – were delivered to the ABC to be sent on to Africa.
ABC Radio Brisbane announcer Madonna King initiated the appeal with the aim of collecting 30,000 shoes for a poverty-stricken community in Zambia.
An orphanage at Livingstone in Zambia will distribute the shoes.
