SUPPORT and generosity for local flood victims has been gathering momentum at Southern Cross Catholic College (SCCC) this term.
Having kept high and dry throughout January on the Redcliffe Peninsula the staff of the multi-campus college rallied to raise much needed funds for the community of Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) “twin school” St Joseph’s Primary School in North Ipswich.
SCCC Principal Robyn Killoran said: “There has been a human, life-changing, attitude of people working together, showing kindness and true spirit.
“We have all been touched by the devastation and a number of people within the SCCC community have close connections, both past and present, with the staff and families of St Joseph’s.”
Initiated from day one, the college’s staff Professional Development Day on January 24 was the launch for the fundraising drive.
Teaching staff, administration, groundsmen and tuckshop convenors dug deep to collect more than $3000 for the flood-affected families of St Joseph’s.
A further $1200 was raised by students in Prep to Year 6 from specialty days held at each of the Early and Junior Years campuses.
BCE Brisbane North Cluster Area supervisor Helen Royan said the money raised would go towards assisting families with school uniforms, bags, books, stationery and other essential items.
SCCC staff have also supported Boystown, through the Lasallian organisation. They made a large donation of clothes to the Goodna and Ipswich offices of Boystown.
Boystown youth worker Matt Fernyhough was touched by the generosity and thanked the college for the clothing donation, reporting that all items have been distributed and well received.
Mr Fernyhough said the flood-affected communities have been adequately provided for with clothing however, there was still a demand for non-perishable food items.
SCCC is collecting non-perishable food and personal items, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, tooth brushes and soap, to be distributed to families in Goodna and Ipswich.
The students are raising additional funds for flood victims by holding a flood benefit concert on March 4.
Entry is $5 and all funds will be donated to the Premier’s Flood Appeal.
