MUSIC students from St Eugene College, Burpengary recently swapped their classroom for the stage as part of a Musica Viva Composition workshop with ARIA award winning singer-songwriter Katie Noonan.
The students from Years 9 to 11 spent time with the Australian artist at Somerville House on August 21 to learn about musical arrangement and song writing.
“It was a great experience to meet and be taught by someone who had actually made a name for themselves within the music industry,” Year 11 student Emily Dalton said.
Ms Noonan also performed for the group and highlighted the importance of individuality.
“Katie told us that the more unique you are, the more you can stand apart from the crowd,” Year 10 student Nicole Murray said.
“We need to be true to ourselves when we compose.”
The students were encouraged to put what they had learnt to practice by arranging and performing a unique cover of Heart’s a Mess by Australian artist Gotye.
St Eugene College’s secondary music teacher Nicky Rose was impressed with both the performance and attitude of the students, who “collaborated on the task with no assistance” and “bravely took to the stage to perform in front of Katie herself.”
Ms Rose said the group “walked away feeling satisfied and just that little bit more confident.”
