YEAR 9 business and enterprise students at Mt St Michael’s, Ashgrove, hope this year’s college open day today (May17) is a huge success.
The students are using the open day to run a business venture, selling “smencils”, gourmet-scented pencils made from recycled newspaper.
Mt St Michael’s head of business studies Kylie Figge said the students were hoping their efforts made for a triple bottom line of financial, social and environmental success.
She said profits would go to the Downs and West Drought Appeal which, despite rain in the south-east and far north, was still providing household hampers, stock feed and moral support to rural Queensland families.
Mt St Michael’s principal Alison Terry said the open day would provide examples of the community action undertaken by students and was an opportunity for people to find out more about the college’s redevelopment plan.
The open day is being held today from 10am-2pm.
