THE RED Cross Blood Service’s 2013 Schools Challenge has been no mean feat for students at Sienna Catholic College in Sippy Downs.
Last year the College’s Year 11 and 12 won the 2013 Queensland titles for Highest Total Donations and Highest Percentage of Student Body.
In total students made 187 donations, making a total contribution rate of 87 per cent, although many students donated their blood twice.
The time has come for this year’s College seniors to roll up their sleeves for the 2014 Schools Blood Challenge.
Australian Red Cross Blood Service Community Relations Officer Rebecca Ind said through the generous blood donations from students, the College collectively saved 561 lives through their passionate efforts and success of the schools blood drive.
Miss Ind said with thousands of new youth donors needed this year, the Blood service was calling on more schools to sign up to their Youth Ambassador Program.
“The Youth Ambassador Program encourages community contribution and is a fun, educational way for schools to introduce blood donation to students,” she said.
Siena Catholic College teacher and outreach co-ordinator Kim Cook said blood donation was a rewarding way of giving back to the community.
“The Schools Blood Challenge promotes a positive peer environment, with students being able to give blood with their classmates and experience this extraordinary process together” she said.
