SETON College, Mt Gravatt East, opened their newly constructed St Louise de Marillac building on August 29.
The new building will house four Year 7 classrooms and a contemporary visual and performing arts centre.
Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge led the official blessing and opening of the building at a formal College assembly.
Seton College school development manager Julie Whitehouse said the school “needed to expand because there was just not enough space”.
The building was a major development to facilitate the increasing population of the school, which has grown from 230 to 300 in the past two years.
Now with the inclusion of Year 7, following changes made to secondary education by the Queensland Government and the National Curriculum, the school desperately needed more rooms.
The construction was funded through a $2.1 million investment from the Queensland Government supported by a College contribution of $500,000.
The opening comes as a major milestone in the fiftieth anniversary celebrations for the college.
Two-time principal Sister Marie Cantwell along with members of the 1964 inaugural class were among the dignitaries present for the commissioning of the St Louise de Marillac building.
Vince Boyle, a member of the 1964 class, presented to the college the first school tie he made from offcuts of the girl’s school uniform.
Mrs Whitehouse described the ceremony as “very moving, very joyful”.
Along with the construction of the building, an undercover area was assembled that links the school’s buildings and serves as a meeting area and lunchtime handball court for the students.
