STUDENTS from All Hallows’ School, Fortitude Valley, have teamed up with a fellow Catholic college to support its long-standing commitment to Brisbane’s homeless.
Last month, Year 11 and 12 volunteers started to join St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, in the operation of its Eddie’s Van, delivering hearty breakfasts to socially disadvantaged people.
Hannah Pedrolini, Luka Byrne and Brigid McCarthy were the first trio to accompany Terrace staff and students to Brisbane City’s Botanical Gardens, where they interacted with members of the community on a personal level while serving freshly cooked sausages and eggs.
“I think this was the start of many enriching experiences that we’ll have with the Eddie’s Van,” Brigid said.
“I found the whole morning quite humbling.”
All Hallows’ mission co-ordinator Angela O’Malley said groups of three would continue to join the Terrace team once a week, and in doing so, she hoped they would develop a greater awareness about social outreach.
“I hope it teaches them to look beyond the obvious disadvantage in people and meet them without stereotypes and judgement, and to be supportive of those people,” she said.
