CHRIS Hampson’s love of his Torres Strait Islands cultural heritage has scored him a Queensland Education Minister’s Award for Excellence in Art.
The St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane senior student’s linocut print, titled “Spirituality”, was recognised as representing the highest standard of achievement among artwork by senior students across Queensland.
The Education Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Art promote and recognise excellence in senior visual arts education throughout state and non-state schools.
Chris said he was excited to have won the award and was proud of his Torres Strait and Islander heritage.
“My work symbolises my personal, cultural and spiritual belief of the Torres Strait Islands.
He said he used a Torres Strait Islands story of the creation of Mer (Murray) Island, off Cape York Peninsula as the inspiration for his linocut print.
Chris acknowledged the assistance of St Laurence’s head of art Neil Kelly in his project.
“Mr Kelly is always available to help the students, to offer advice and to recognise our achievements,” he said.
Chris said he hoped to pursue a career in education as an art teacher or move into psychology when he applies for university next year.
Chris’ artwork, along with other award winners, will be displayed at the Queensland Art Gallery in early 2007 before the exhibition tours regional art galleries across the state.
