DRINKING from the “bubblers” has never been so much fun for Prep students at St Augustine’s Parish Primary School, Currumbin Waters.

Every time they go for a drink the Preppies are transported to a land far, far away through a mural created by former student and artist Aidan May.

Mr May, who also is a former Marymount College student, painted the mural as a project for his Queensland College of Art studies where he is in his final year of animation studies.

As part of his studies he was asked to do a project that would benefit a community so he approached St Augustine’s principal Stephen Montgomery about doing something for the school.

Mr Montgomery jumped at the opportunity and they searched for a suitable place at the school.

A blank wall in front of the Prep building fitted the bill.

Aidan’s mother Trish May, who is also a Year 4 teacher at St Augustine’s, said the result of his hard work was amazing.

She said it was a total surprise for the Preppies and parents, who were all delighted with the results.

“There were lots of ‘wows’ when they first saw it – and that wasn’t just the kids either,” she said.

She said the Prep students loved exploring the landscape and the different “animals” that featured in the mural when they go for a drink of water.

Ms May said the Preps were so happy with their new mural they made Aidan a little thank you book.

“It featured messages such as ‘it is awesome’ and ‘thanks for the cool mural’ and they even attempted to draw some of their own ‘animal’ creations for him,” she said.
