Festivities roll out for college anniversary
MOUNT St Michael’s College welcomed more than 300 past staff and students to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the school through an array of events on Saturday, August 1.
Principal Allison Terrey said the milestone marked a significant moment to reflect on the school’s history, while also recognising the incredible progress it has made.
“In my time at the college I’ve seen the school come from a small back pocket community school, to a highly respected thriving college, in academic and sporting arenas,” Ms Terrey said.
The Past Pupils Association were involved in organising the day for alumni, who consisted of recent graduates to Lola Prout and Joy Cowley, graduating in 1938 and 1940.
The gathering were treated to tours of the school by students and shown hospitality with lunch and champagne.
“All those gathered affirmed that despite the intervening years, the college’s commitment to the charism of Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters of Charity had not waivered,” Ms Terrey said.
Fittingly the anniversary coincided with the 200-year anniversary of the founding Sisters of Charity, established by Mary Aikenhead in Ireland in 1815.
“It is amazing to think what they achieved, from five sisters travelling to Australia on a boat, our college is a product of their faith,” Ms Terrey said.
Ms Terrey is intent on the college staying committed to the core values ingrained by the Sisters of Charity.
“We as a school strive to be guided by our five c’s, compassion, conscience, commitment confidence and competence, also embracing our motto of a positive attitude with a heart of gratitude,” she said.
Alumni president Keleisha Rigby-Smith said she hoped the event encouraged all past pupils to maintain a connection with their college.
