THE netball team from St John Fisher College, Bracken Ridge, is celebrating after scoring a third place in this year’s Vicki Wilson Netball Cup, following a seventh place in 2010.
About 180 teams from secondary schools across Queensland competed in the prestigious inter-school, open-age competition with St John Fisher coming through the preliminary rounds to be among the top 16 teams competing in the finals.
After a hard-fought finals series, held over two days at the State Netball Centre at Upper Mt Gravatt, the college placed third behind John Paul College and St Peter’s Lutheran College, both known statewide for their netball programs and nationally accredited coaches.
Coached by health and physical education co-ordinator Danielle Maluga and volunteer coach Rob Messer, the Bracken Ridge team was one of two to make the finals in the Met North region, claiming some big scalps along the way including St Margaret’s School.
Principal Maree Messer said it was a wonderful accomplishment.
“We are very proud of our girls’ achievement given we only have 450 girls and the team consisted of girls from all levels across Years 8-12,” she said. “All players took to the court at some stage over the two-day finals.”
Year 11 student Mahalia Cassidy was also selected in the 2011 Vicki Wilson Merit Team.
The St John Fisher team is looking forward to building on its success in 2012 with the loss of only three players who will be graduating.
