BRISBANE Catholic Education’s (BCE) inaugural Multimedia Expo, which incorporated the organisation’s annual film festival, was a huge success, drawing staff and students from schools and colleges across Brisbane archdiocese.
On day one of the expo BCE executive director David Hutton launched ResourceLink, BCE’s merged multimedia and library services that will now offer better and more up-to-date resources to staff working in schools.
While still located at Dutton Park, ResourceLink will become a repository and sharing space for online users, inspiring, supporting and challenging BCE staff and Brisbane archdiocesan groups to access, use and develop quality resources and pedagogies for creative and effective learning and teaching.
It also allowed for shared staffing, distribution networks and software, more effective use of existing archive and off-site storage areas, stronger collegiate peer group mentoring, reduced duplication of processes and facilitate one point of access for staff to search for information.
Film festival patrons enjoyed the screening of two Australian-made films, The Black Balloon and Unfinished Sky, and one foreign film, The Lives of Others, at the O’Shea Centre, Wilston.
They were able to join a discussion involving a star-studded panel that included producer of Unfinished Sky Cathy Overett and newspaper columnist Kathleen Noonan.
The festival also showcased student-produced films based around this year’s Caritas Australia theme of “Be More”.
ResourceLink co-ordinator Kerry Rush said the inaugural Multimedia Expo was a stimulating and thought-provoking professional development opportunity for teachers.
She said the expo featured quality keynote and workshop presentations and participants came away with Ekka-style bags full of new ways to “Be More” multimedia and Google-savvy, techno-literate and critical, socially just, connected, and contemporary learner-centred.
“One ‘true believer’ who returns each year to the film festival commented the Multimedia Expo was one of BCE’s best-kept (professional development) secrets,” she said.
A new website, still under construction, was also launched during the expo.
