STUDENTS at Mt Maria College, Petrie, have launched a book on environmental tips and facts aimed at Generation Y.

“Gen Y Care: Tips we want to share” features unique photography and artwork from all students within the Ya Ya Bitsi team, with tips collected from members of the local community and businesses.

The group of 17 Year 11 students set up the business, Ya Ya Bitsi, as part of the Young Achievement Australia Program.

More than 200 people including students and staff and special guests Scott Templeman, from Moreton Bay Regional Council, Jenny Chew and Laura Turner, from Young Achievement Australia, and representatives from Brisbane Catholic Education Centre and Brisbane North Institute of TAFE attended the launch at the college.

The original drawings, by Daniel Cordery, and quirky chapter titles are engaging features of the book that encourages the reader to consider the way they recycle, cook, use water, drive and garden.

The team also ensured that as a company it practiced what it preaches.

Throughout the production process the business was environmentally aware and environmentally friendly, seeking advice and tips from local businesses and community groups and even enlisting a Sydney-based printing company, that uses only recycled paper and vegetable inks, to produce the book.

Project co-ordinator Fiona Turner said the Ya Ya Bitsi team was to be commended for recognising Generation Y as future leaders and for taking on this responsibility of leading by example.

She said the students proved that Generation Y would play a huge part in bringing about the necessary changes to build a socially just and ecologically sustainable world.

“The publication of this book gives me confidence that the future of our planet is in good hands,” she said.

She said the coffee-table-style book was the perfect gift and at $10 a book it not only supported the environment but also future business ventures of the Generation Ys at Mt Maria College, Petrie.

Copies of the book are available from Mt Maria College, Petrie, and Dymocks book store at North Lakes.
