FOR the next two months, Lourdes Hill, Hawthorne, 2006 college captain Astrid Jorgensen will be immersed in African culture.
From December 14 until February 14, she will be in the Republic of Zambia in Africa.
She will be in the care of her aunt, a Franciscan nun who works there as a nurse and a teacher.
In Zambia, more than 86 per cent of the population lives in poverty, the unemployment rate stands at 52 per cent and the average life expectancy is 39.
“While I don’t have any real skills; medical, agricultural, bow hunting or otherwise, I will visit several schools, particularly those with special needs students, armed with an unrelenting supply of music,” Astrid said.
“During my stay I will also visit some hospitals and rural missions which the Franciscan order has established throughout Zambia and I would love to go on an African safari tour as well.
“I’m excited to experience a culture very different to that which I’m accustomed to, and to perhaps gain some perspective on life in Australia,” she said.
