BOARDING students will be phased out at Lourdes Hill College, Hawthorne from 2007.
Principal Narelle Mullins said the move had been a difficult decision by the college board and the Congregation of the Good Samaritan Sisters.
“Lourdes Hill has a long and proud tradition and our boarding community has made an enormous contribution to the rich tapestry of college life over a long period.”
She said a long-term decline in the demand for boarding coupled with improved access to education in regional areas had been key factors in the decision.
“The college has conducted extensive research and sought external advice on the operation, direction and viability of our boarding school facilities.
“And following a long and careful process of discernment and in the interest of prudent, long term planning, the difficult decision needed to be taken now.”
Mrs Mullins said she expected the announcement would be met with sadness.
“Next year the college will mark its 90th anniversary and it is planned that this event will incorporate a special celebration of the history and contribution of our boarding school.”
Mrs Mullins emphasised the current boarders would not be disrupted by the decision.
“From 2007, no Year 8 boarders will be accepted and boarding will then be phased out as each year level completes Year 12.
“Enrolments for students entering boarding in 2006 will be honoured by the college,” she said.
