LOURDES Hill College environmental group, Students Protecting and Restoring Creation (SPARC), has received the thumbs-up from Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland.
SPARC has adopted a section of road near the school as part of Keep Australia Beautiful’s “Adopt-a-Road” program.
Jai Ogilvie, from Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland, said the program involved local groups taking responsibility for maintaining and keeping local roads clean and litter-free.
“Lourdes Hill College (Hawthorne, Brisbane) performed a clean-up of their chosen area which is approximately 1km from all of Virginia Avenue, from Hawthorne Road down to Lindsay Street (recently),” he said.
“The girls have been performing these clean-ups since May, 2010, and are now awaiting their two recognition signs to be erected.”
Mr Ogilvie said the college also won the Litter Management award in Keep Australia Beautiful’s – Brisbane’s Spotless Suburbs program.
SPARC co-ordinator Guy Pousson said the recent clean-up was part of a week of activities aimed at promoting SPARC’s work and spreading its message to the wider Lourdes Hill community.
“SPARC is proud to announce that Keep Australia Beautiful have agreed to erect signs on Hawthorne Road and Virginia Avenue acknowledging the Adopt-a-Road work we have done over the past two years,” he said.
“It’s distressing how much litter accumulates over the two months between our working-bees. We easily fill two big plastic bin bags each time.”
Mr Pousson said other activities during the week included the introduction of a new mascot, a Green Tree Frog, SPARCY, and a Green Cake stall to raise funds for vegetable planter boxes to grow vegetables in support of the Tongan Church Outreach program in New Farm.
“The SPARC girls have volunteered to plant and nurture the vegetables during their lunch breaks,” he said.
