IGNATIUS Park College, Townsville backed up its 2011 Confraternity win with a convincing 2012 victory over St Peter Claver College, Riverview.

The annual Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League Carnival known as the Confraternity Shield attracted 40 teams and more than 800 players to St Patrick’s College Shorncliffe from June 24-29.

The predominantly Catholic school teams battled wet weather and the mud vying for supremacy in five competitions, the Confraternity Shield, Bob Lindner Trophy, Confraternity Plate, Confraternity Bowl and Confraternity Cup.

St Francis College, Crestmead were undefeated going into the Confraternity cup final only to go down 24-12 to Toowoomba’s Concordia Lutheran College.

In the Bowl final Columba Catholic College, Charters Towers proved too strong for an evenly matched St Luke’s Anglican College, Bundaberg holding them off for an 18-12 victory.

The Plate final saw Blackheath and Thornburgh Anglican College, Charters Towers back in the winners’ circle with a 16-nil win over Marist College Emerald.

The two top competitions, the Bob Lindner Trophy and the Confraternity Shield were all Catholic school affairs with Marymount College Burleigh Waters running away winners over a determined Padua College to take the trophy 30-8.

Last years Trophy winners St Peter Claver College, Riverview came up against the impressive 2011 Shield winners Ignatius Park, College Townsville in the Confraternity Shield final.

Ignatius Park had points on the board within minutes and despite St Peter Claver appearing outclassed in the first half, the Riverview boys came back to score at the half time mark and put in a solid defence effort throughout the match.

The north Queenslanders never looked like slowing down or being beaten and posted a 28-6 victory to take their second Confraternity shield in a row.

Player of the final was Ignatius Park player Valentine Holmes with Southern Cross Catholic College, Scarborough taking out the Spirit of Confraternity Award.
