Historical figures on show at school

GIFTED and talented students from St Eugene College, Burpengary, had the opportunity to assume the identity of some of history’s most notable figures earlier this year.

At the college’s first “Night of the Notables”, students took on the role of notable characters that inspired their own interests.

St Eugene’s, Gifted and Talented co-ordinator Megan Diezmann said 20 students from Years 7 to 10 took part in the evening that was planned as an annual event.

“Over 70 parents, students, teachers and friends came to meet and mingle with celebrity look-alikes including aviator Amelia Earhart, artist Claude Monet and singer Kylie Minogue,” she said.

Ms Diezmann said the college’s gifted and talented program allowed students to study an influential person in their area of interest and she was surprised by some of the “notables” chosen.

“I thought they would choose more characters from pop culture but there were a couple of composers whose names I couldn’t even pronounce along with St Joan of Arc and gymnast Monette Russo,” she said.

She said the evening was a whole-school event with stunning costumes, artistic displays, interactive technology and gymnastic demonstrations.

“It was a fabulous night … even staff and guests came dressed up as their favourite notable. The colour and energy was very exciting.”

Ms Diezmann said fellow students were also involved with advertising organised by media studies students, a special performance by the school’s talented 25-student vocal group, and wine and cheese served by food studies students.

“The end result was an evening of sensory delight, where guests ‘met’ notables in areas of music, art, dance, literature and scientific discovery.”
