STUDENTS from Year 1 at St Dympna’s School, Aspley, have reached out to children in hospital to make their stay a little brighter in the lead up to Christmas.
On November 24, a group of young students from the school delivered colourful hand-made gift bags full of Christmas goodies to children who are being treated at the Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital.
The children exchanged Christmas wishes with patients who are keeping up with their studies at the nearby Royal Brisbane Hospital School.
St Dympna’s teacher Melanie Kennedy said the students were keen to raise the spirits of the children undergoing treatment.
“Each of the 90 Year 1 children enthusiastically took on the challenge of designing and creating the bags throughout the school term,” she said.
“Touchingly, each student included a personalised letter for each patient to highlight the fact that every individual is in their thoughts as they themselves prepare for Christmas at home.”
The gift bags, decorated in Christmas themes, contained a range of items from hand-made bon-bons to Christmas tree decorations.
The theme and idea were generated from the Year 1 work entitled “What’s inside that counts” and the “Qualities of Jesus”.
Following the presentation of the Christmas bags, students and staff from both schools shared afternoon tea in the classroom at the hospital school.
