A SHORT film made by students at Holy Family School, Indooroopilly, has won a prestigious Australian Teachers of Media award.
The school won the 2013 Best Primary School Film Production at the ATOM awards, which celebrate the best of Australian and New Zealand screen content from the education sector and screen industry professionals.
The film, titled On the Bright Side, featured the Grizzleguts who, with their glass-half-empty attitude, see the world around them as grey and silent (silent film genre).
Following a visit from Mr Arthur Glass-Half-Full, they soon learn to see the world’s colours and hear its music and are much happier for the experience.
Writer, director and Holy Family teacher Sue Chapman said it was an honour and a privilege to represent the school community at the ceremony in Melbourne and accept the award on their behalf.
She said it involved the special envelope, trophy, lots of photos, industry leaders, networking and the chance to see the winners’ films on the big screen.
“I was just thrilled to see our Year 6/7s up there doing such a great job,” she said.
Year 7 student Remy Davidson, who played Mr Arthur Glass-Half-Full, said it was fun to film.
“Seeing the finished product was great and then to find out we had won this award, that was awesome,” she said.
“I felt so proud of my fellow classmates and Ms Chapman especially.”
Ms Chapman said putting the film together was a rich learning experience for the students, combining creativity, performance and technology.
“Our students flourish as they engage in these opportunities to express themselves,” she said.
“They are able to reach a significant standard of excellence because they come from a supportive school community, where teachers continually expand their horizons and encourage them to step out into the world with courage and enthusiasm.
“We are all part of each other’s success and I am proud to be part of such a team.”
