SOUTHERN Cross Catholic College helped raise more than $15,000 for breast cancer research on September 10, and it all started with a dare from Year 8 student Mitchell Hintz.
The dare was submitted to actor Samuel Johnson, who is riding a unicycle around the country to raise $1 million for cancer research as part of the Love Your Sister challenge.
“I saw Samuel on TV when his ride started and thought I had to get involved in some way to help,” Mitchell, a fellow unicycle enthusiast, said.
He dared Mr Johnson to ride a daunting 1.5m high unicycle across the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge – the longest bridge in Australia – and “couldn’t believe it” when Samuel accepted and asked Mitchell to join him for the trip.
“I’m scared of heights, so it was a great challenge Mitch cooked up,” Mr Johnson said.
Staff and students from SCCC were out in force to support the pair of cyclists through their unique one-wheel-ride across the bridge.
After the ride, Mr Johnson stopped by SCCC to talk to the Year 7, 8 and 9 students about health awareness.
Mr Hintz and his father Bruce also organised a special charity luncheon at the Belvedere Hotel, Woody Point, to raise funds for Love Your Sister.
