CHRISTMAS appeals for the St Vincent de Paul Society have wrapped up in schools across Queensland, and Salisbury’s St Pius X is one of many to have made an angelic effort.
St Pius held a “Christmas Charity Day” where students wore their best festive outfits, but instead of bringing in the usual gold coin, they brought non-perishable food items for the appeal.
St Pius’ Year 7 “Dignity Leadership Team” – Zeke Eisentrager, Ashleigh Grosseholz and Ben Shih – put forward the idea, because they said the poor in their community had “a right to enjoy Christmas”.
And principal Lorraine Walker felt their idea had been a success.
“When the kids are getting dressed up in their Christmas gear they realise it is a privilege, and it makes them aware that this is an extra special day,” she said.
“It also encourages them to bring in things that are a bit Christmassy, not just anything out of the cupboard.”
Pickled onions, plum puddings and fruit mince pies were among the many donations handed over to St Vinnies on Friday.
