STUDENTS at St James College, Brisbane put all thoughts of holidays aside to undertake a collection for the St Vincent de Paul Society’s Christmas Appeal in the final weeks of school.
The college’s appeal, co-ordinated by Year 11 student Maranda Aiavao, collected 45 hampers of toys and food which were delivered to the St Vincent de Paul Welfare Centre at Inala in time for Christmas.
All 450 students, from Years 8-12, were involved in the collection, which finished on November 18.
Canossian Sister Melissa Dwyer, who teaches at the college, said students were encouraged to bring in one item per week, for four weeks, but far exceeded expectations.
Sr Dwyer said each home room had a specific focus for their collection.
She said two teachers accompanied students who contributed to the appeal to deliver the goods to volunteers at Inala on November 21.
