CELEBRITY chef Dominique Rizzo took time out from a busy schedule to show Prep students at Mary Immaculate School, Annerley, that food can be fun.
Using many and varied ingredients, the TV chef helped students make shaped sandwiches and fruit and veggie stick people, followed by tasty treats.
Dominique, a regular on the TV program Ready, Steady, Cook! was a surprise guest for the Prep students’ unit of work “Healthy Food, Healthy Bodies”.
Prep teacher Dianna Ponzo said her students were excited about having a real chef come and talk with them and to show them fun ways to use food.
Ms Ponzo said it was a fantastic experience for the students and it was great for them to experience different foods they would not usually experience.
Student Emily Baxter said Ms Rizzo showed her fun things to do with food. “I made a stick man with all the fruits and we also got to decorate cakes with whatever we wanted,” she said.
“It was great when we got to eat what we had made.”
Ms Rizzo said watching the enthusiasm of the students creating their food masterpieces inspired her.
She said it was important for them to learn about food at a young age, making fruit and veggies fun for them so they ate a healthy diet.
“To be able to give them an opportunity to taste a range of different foods and show them that you can put different foods together was a little crazy, but it was also an opportunity for them to find out what they like about different foods,” she said.
“They let their imaginations run wild creating something that’s fun.
“I think the children really enjoyed what they were making,” she said.
Ms Rizzo said she found it easier working with the preppies than on TV.
“I loved it, I had a really good time, hopefully I’ll get to do a bit more of it,” she said.
After the lessons students enjoyed sharing their food creations with each other.
