OUR Lady of the Way School, Petrie, has responded to the call from the Pyjama Foundation by donating books and pyjamas to the worthy cause.
Teacher librarian Sandra Driver, who co-ordinated the pyjama drive, said her inspiration to begin the pyjama drive at the school came after reading a story written by Rebecca Sparrow for a Sunday newspaper.
She read about how the Pyjama Foundation provided pyjamas and other supplies to children taken into foster care and how they trained people to become Pyjama Angels who in turn gave regular support to children in care.
Mrs Driver said like other schools, Our Lady of the Way School, had students who were in foster care, and, as a community, it supported projects that helped children in need.
She said children supported by the Pyjama Foundation often had lower literacy levels, and in reading about this, she suggested the school could help.
After contacting the foundation she offered all the books being removed from the school library to the foundation.
Out of that grew the pyjama drive.
Mrs Driver said she was thrilled with the response from the school community who donated more than 100 pairs of pyjamas.
She said that, under the school pillar of “Community”, students eagerly supported ways to outreach to people in need in the school, and in the local and wider community and were keen to help in this endeavour.
Principal Jeff Hall said he was proud of the way students and families embraced the school pillar of community through their generosity.
