STUDENTS from St John Fisher College, Bracken Ridge and St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe hosted an outdoor community breakfast on February 7 as part of their Street Retreat program.
Last year students from St John Fisher College, under the guidance of assistant principal for religious education Brenda Quigley, joined with their counterparts from St Patrick’s College for the first time in a street retreat.
This month’s exercise involved preparing and serving breakfast and enjoying the company of a wide range of people including residents, people from aged care homes and people on the margins.
The venue, Decker Park, Brighton, provided a sea view and good barbecue facilities.
A weekly roster of Year 10 and 11 students and teachers had been compiled. Cups of tea and coffee and sandwiches of barbecued sausages and eggs provided a hearty start to the day.
St John Fisher student Melissa Polkinghorne said helping out at the retreat was an enjoyable experience.
“I enjoy mixing and chatting to the people and hearing what they have to say,” she said.
Ms Quigley said the street retreat opened the students’ eyes to a diversity of people in the community.
“It gives them an opportunity to enjoy the company of and be of service to a wide group of locals,” she said.
