AQUINAS College, Ashmore, has given thanks for the support and assistance in the aftermath of a fierce storm that hit the school last November.
In particular, the State Emergency Service’s Gold Coast team was a godsend both on the night and during the clean up which followed.
Loyal parents and teachers have also dedicated their time to getting the school back on track.
Principal Maryanne Finder said the school had never witnessed such a disaster and could not have coped without community help.
“We lost nine classrooms, the roof of the music block ended up in the football fields, our technical equipment was ruined and the playground looked like a swimming pool,” Ms Finder said. “There was so much damage, but the SES was amazing.”
Thankful staff and students recently hosted a special lunch on March 28 to show their appreciation to more than 30 guests, including Gold Coast SES controller Peter Linnell and Southport Parish associate priest Fr Paul Chandler.
“The community gave a tremendous amount to us, so we wanted to give something small in return,” Ms Finder said.
“It’s always nice to be thanked.”
