UNWANTED items taking up space in homes throughout Brisbane could contribute to a new outdoor arts learning facility at Christ the King Primary School, Graceville.
Parent volunteers from the school travel all over Brisbane picking up donated furniture, household items, bric-a-brac, books, clothes and music for the school’s Mega Garage Sale to be held on June 14.
As well as promoting good recycling habits by helping residents dispose of their unwanted goods, all proceeds from the garage sale will help give students at Christ the King a new outdoors learning facility.
Work on the outdoor space includes upgrading an art area and creating a class gathering space for drama and other arts subjects.
Fiona Forbes is a mother of six children, four of whom attend Christ the King, and is this year’s garage sale convenor.
Mrs Forbes offered to convene the project because she loved the idea that her children will be beneficiaries of the garage sale.
Principal Trudy Walsh said the annual garage sale already had a “bit of a following”.
“It starts at 6am and from what Fiona tells me, people are lining up to pick up a bargain,” she said.
The garage sale – along with a fete and market to be held on the following day, Sunday, June 15 – is a primary source of funding for projects throughout the school.
“The level of support we get from the parish, school and local communities is fantastic and we hope to build on this every year, as it is central to our school’s fundraising activities,” Mrs Walsh said.
