THE drought and famine affecting millions of men, women and children in East Africa has resonated with students at Assisi College, Upper Coomera.
Assisi assistant principal for religious education Danny McCormick said students could see what was happening via news reports, Caritas information and religious education classes, and were pleased to be able to do something to help.
“They could see what was happening in East Africa and we’ve always really encouraged the Franciscan ethos, in particular the commitment to social justice and this was one way the kids could put that commitment into practice,” he said.
Mr McCormick said students constructed a coin line designed around the name of St Francis, raising about $1800 for famine relief in East Africa.
“This allowed the kids to get an idea of exactly what is happening in other parts of the world and they were very pleased to be able to help,” he said.
He said the funds had already been sent to Caritas Australia for the East Africa Appeal.
