A FIRE has gutted the 68-year-old St Mary’s Church, Bundaberg, on Barolin Street in the early hours of Tuesday, February 11.

Six fire crews attended the blaze about 4am.

Police have charged a man following the alleged arson of a church in Bundaberg.

The church, which was unoccupied at the time, was completely destroyed by the blaze.

A 42-year-old Bundaberg West man was later charged with one count each of arson, enter with intent and attempted arson.

He will appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Bundaberg’s News Mail reported one patient was treated for injuries and taken to Bundaberg Base Hospital in a stable condition.

Parish priest Fr Peter Tonti said in a message written on Facebook that it was a “sudden and very sad loss”.

He said there would be talks as to what would happen with the St Mary’s location.

“This is a time for remembering,” Fr Tonti said.

Rockhampton diocese also put out a message on Facebook that said the fire seemed to have started at around 3am and took some hours to put out.

“The cause is unknown at this stage,” the diocesan message read.
