ARCHBISHOP John Bathersby of Brisbane has described Peter Olsen’s decision to become the archdiocese’s first permanent deacon as ‘heroic’ in an age when selfishness can be so attractive.
In his homily at Deacon Olsen’s ordination in St Mary’s Church, Ipswich on March 1, Archbishop Bathersby said ‘we are deeply indebted to him for his generosity and courage’.
Sixty-eight year-old Deacon Olsen is the first of a group of men to be ordained to the permanent diaconate for the archdiocese. Fifteen others are preparing for their ordination.
About 500 people attended Deacon Olsen’s ordination, and he said what made the liturgy so special was that so many people were there because they wanted to be there and to celebrate.
Archbishop Bathersby said Deacon Olsen is the first of a group of deacons who will strengthen the life of the archdiocese.
Deacon Olsen will continue on the pastoral team at St Mary’s, which has sponsored his formation through the diaconate program.
He is married to Sharon and is supported in his new role by five daughters.
