THE Catholic Women’s League (CWL) has called for more equitable petrol pricing in Queensland.
The call was made at the CWL’s Queensland conference in Mackay from September 7-10.
The conference’s theme was “Voices that Challenge” and was attended by 160 delegates from around the state.
They carried wide-ranging motions, including one that the CWL ask the State Government to “maintain a visible commitment to provision of more public housing for low-income people”.
Another successful motion made clear the CWL’s opposition to mandatory sentencing.
Delegates decided that Premier Peter Beattie’s attention should be brought to the proliferation of automated phone services in government and private offices, “particularly the ‘menus’ which are plaguing the community”.
The conference decided the league should ask through the Australian Health Ethics Committee for uniform national legislation on the human genome project and the human rights which could be affected.
It will also urge the State Government to enhance perpetrator education programs such as a domestic violence prevention strategy.
