MANCHESTER, England (CNS): Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor of Westminster has called for a change of culture in the English and Welsh Church, urging Catholics to do more to be an ‘evangelising community’.
‘There is indifference to Christian values and to the Church among many young people and, indeed, not only the young,’ he said, describing a selfish and demoralised society.
In a wide-ranging address to the annual National Conference of Priests meeting in Leeds, in northern England, on September 5, Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor spoke of his vision for the future of the Church.
He said it was essential that the prayer life of the Church – the liturgy – be developed to reveal ‘the gift of God in Word and sacrament so that it comes alive in all its power’.
Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said that, besides attending Sunday Mass, Catholics needed to develop small communities within parishes.
