WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (CNS): A group of more than 40 south Florida Hispanic priests have signed a letter to US President Bill Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno, critical of the government’s handling of the seizure of Cuban tug-of-love boy, Elian Gonzalez.
The letter, sent on April 26, expresses the priests’ “profound rejection, disappointment and shock at the way government agencies have conducted themselves in the Elian Gonzalez affair”.
The letter points out that the pre-dawn raid on a home in Little Havana, Florida, on April 22 and the forcible removal of the six year-old Cuban refugee took place over the Easter weekend.
The letter was drafted by a group of five Cuban-American priests and signed by a total of 44 priests, according to Fr Federico Capdepon, a Spaniard who has worked with Cuban exiles for 30 years in Europe and Florida.
