SIX new delta variant coronavirus cases in Brisbane has forced health officials to plunge the 11 mask-wearing local government areas into a three day lockdown from 4pm today.
The new cases today were related to the Indooroopilly High School case discovered yesterday and brings the local cluster to seven.
Among the infections today were members of the school student’s family, a tutor and a staff member at one of the family member’s schools.
Deputy Premier Steven Miles said these were the toughest restrictions the state could implement in order to stop the spread of the delta variant, the same strain of COVID-19 that has caused hundreds of daily cases in New South Wales.
People in Brisbane and the other mask-wearing local government areas can only leave home for four reasons – to obtain essential goods; for essential work, school or childcare; for exercise with only one member who is not from your household; and for healthcare.
These restrictions also require people not to leave an area within 10km of your home.
The lockdown also means churches and places of worship will be shut.
The lockdown applies to anyone who has been in those 11 LGAs since 1am this morning.
Chief health officer Jeanette Young also urged people to also leave home in order to get a vaccine, so long as they are not in quarantine.
She especially encouraged anyone over the age of 60 to especially go and get your dose of the vaccine.
“Stay home,” she said.
More to come.
