BRISBANE Catholics have been called to respond to the human impact on climate change.
A conference at St James College, Fortitude Valley, on March 16-17 was aimed at equipping Christians with the information needed to take their own action on the problem.
“Responding to Climate Change: The Call for Ecological Conversion” was jointly organised by the Social Action Office (SAO) of the Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes Queensland and the Brisbane Catholic Justice and Peace Commission.
The conference drew particular attention to Pope John Paul II’s call for “ecological conversion” and his insistence that environmental action was a moral responsibility for Christians.
Keynote speakers included former executive officer of Catholic Earthcare Australia, Col Brown, and Scripture scholar, Sister of Mercy Veronica Lawson.
Dr Clyde Wild, who is director of the Centre for Innovative Conservation Strategies at Griffith University, provided participants with an overview of the scientific evidence for climate change.
