BRISBANE archdiocese’s Centacare outreach celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Mass at St Stephen’s Cathedral on Monday.
Among the 300 worshippers were past and present Centacare staff and clients along with many priests and bishops, also with previous or current involvement with the work of the agency.
Principal celebrant Archbishop John Bathersby of Brisbane praised the efforts of all staff over the five decades.
State Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace attended the Mass, representing Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, State Minister for Community Services and Housing Karen Struthers and State Minister for Child Safety Phil Reeves.
A disability services client and a pastoral ministries worker came forward with the gifts of bread and wine during the offertory procession.
At the morning tea after the Mass, Ms Bligh’s recorded message of gratitude and praise was viewed.
Centacare Brisbane’s diverse social services provide practical assistance to families, people with disabilities, frail and aged people, the marginalised, and the unemployed.
It also provides a range of pastoral ministries and parish support services, counselling and life education programs.
