SEPTEMBER 3 was a special day for lovers of choral music with two world renowned choirs performing in St Stephen’s Cathedral in Brisbane.
The Freiburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir (Freiburger Domsingknaben) performed during the 10am Mass concelebrated by Brisbane Archbishop John Bathersby, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor of Westminster, England and Brisbane Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Oudeman.
At 4pm, international prize-winning ensemble, the Girton College Chapel Choir from Cambridge University performed a concert for several hundred people in the cathedral.
English conductor Martin Ennis directed the Girton College Choir in a program devoted to the English choral tradition.
Cathedral director of music Ralph Morton said many were familiar with the excellent and highly publicised college choirs from Cambridge such as King’s and St John’s, but the concert was an opportunity to see another aspect of the famous Cambridge choral tradition.
