THE De La Salle Brothers said last week that they had called in the police to investigate irregularities in BoysTown’s finances, but that the amount involved would not have an impact on the charity’s operations.
BoysTown board chairman Br Ambrose Payne said in a statement that the brothers had appointed a professional manager last December to consolidate the delivery of existing services and to lead BoysTown into a new growth phase to provide services nationally.
‘Issues regarding organisation processes and systems were raised with the new CEO, who, in response, instigated a thorough review of all aspects of the organisation’s operations,’ Br Payne said.
‘As is standard practice, external independent business consultants (PricewaterhouseCoopers) were appointed to undertake a procedures and management audit.
‘In their report they identified some financial irregularities that prompted the brothers to seek further explanations from a number of former and current employees.
‘The report, with the explanations of former and current employees, was referred for a legal review to a QC, whose advice was to refer the matter to the police for further investigation.’
