A CLAYFIELD parishioner’s appeal through The Catholic Leader for donations of unwanted Duplo and Lego kits to help children with autism has paid off.
Rebecca Gair, who works as a physiotherapist at Autism Queensland’s two centres, one each on Brisbane’s northside and southside, said a week after the request was made on August 22 she was a little disappointed with the outcome.
‘I thought that we were rather unsuccessful, as no offers had been received after the story appeared in The Catholic Leader,’ she said.
‘However, when I arrived at work on August 31 there was a box of brand new Lego waiting.’
The donor, Patricia Abbey, runs a home day care centre for children in Cairns.
Ms Abbey said she usually liked to give something to charities but had never really thought about autistic children until she read the story in The Catholic Leader.
Ms Gair said the blocks can by used by children from Preschool and up to develop physical and sensory skills, like hand-eye co-ordination and fine motor skills.
Duplo and Lego sets can be donated to Autism Queensland at PO Box 363, Sunnybank, Qld 4109, phone (07) 3273 0000, alternatively to PO Box 136, Brighton, Qld 4017 or phone (07) 3869 0444.
