RETIRED New Zealand Bishop Len Boyle said he had no complaints about his annual Aussie flutter on the horses.
‘I got near enough to square and that’s all any punter can ask,’ he said.
Bishop Boyle of Dunedin, who travels to Brisbane each June to attend the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, celebrated this year’s racing Mass at Hendra parish on June 5.
The Mass serves to officially bless the start of the Brisbane racing season.
He said details of the Mass were announced a number of times at the track the day before and a notice was put in the guide.
Bishop Boyle said he and fellow priest Fr Bryan Winders, who is a hospital chaplain in Dunedin, had been travelling to Brisbane for about 20 years but normally arrived the week after the Mass.
Bishop Boyle said since his recent retirement he had been conducting four-day missions in parishes throughout New Zealand.
He said he was able to return Brisbane’s hospitality each year in January when Archbishop John Bathersby visited.
