KIDS and motorbikes – that’s all the incentive needed for big softies like Phil Symons and Damian O’Carrigan to hit the road on November 14 on an annual charity ride for the Queensland Cord Blood Bank.
The Charity Motorcycle Run for the cord blood bank at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital has been part of their calendar for the past five years.
Today they will have about 700 motorcyclists riding with them, raising funds for the service which helps children with leukaemia.
Cord blood donor recruitment and collections co-ordinator Jay Symons said cord blood has proven to be an effective alternative to bone marrow transplantation in treating children with leukaemia or other serious blood disorders.
Jay’s husband, Phil, and his workmate Damian needed no more persuading other than to know the charity run helps children with leukaemia before they became two of its best supporters.
Jay said the cord blood bank had banked more than 3000 units of cord blood since it opened in 1999.
