THE Catholic Leader has been recognised officially as the best Catholic newspaper in Australasia.
The paper won the Bishop Phillip Kennedy Award for excellence in Catholic newspaper journalism at the Australasian Catholic Press Association Awards in Perth on August 12.
This is the third time The Leader has won the top accolade since 1999.
The paper scored six other prizes or high commendations at the Australasian Catholic Press and the Australasian Religious Press Awards which were also in Perth.
In the religious press awards, The Catholic Leader won the Best Newspaper Layout and Design category and a highly commended prize for a photo of school friends crying at the funeral of murdered schoolgirl Sidhi Singh. The photographer was Rene Marcel.
In the Catholic press awards, The Catholic Leader’s Web site won the Best Web Site category.
Editor Marcus Kuczynski’s headline ‘Desperately seeking Susan’s miracle’ won the Best Headline category.
Robin Williams’ front page story ‘Miracle boy’ won a highly commended prize for Best News Story.
The special edition on the Pope’s silver jubilee won a highly commended prize for Best Feature in a Newspaper.
This year’s Bishop Phillip Kennedy Award for best magazine was won by the Broken Bay News.
