RETIRED Archbishop Eric D’Arcy, who led the Tasmanian Church for 11 years, died on December 12 at the age of 81.
Archbishop D’Arcy had developed pneumonia in recent days and was a patient at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne at the time of his death.
A requiem Mass was to be celebrated for him in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne on December 16.
His body will be returned to Tasmania for a Mass of Christian burial in St Mary’s Cathedral, Hobart at 11am on December 19.
He will then be buried in thecathedral grounds.
Archbishop Adrian Doyle of Hobart asked Tasmanians to remember Archbishop D’Arcy in their prayers.
Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon said he joined with other Tasmanians, particularly the Catholic community, in mourning the death of the archbishop.
Hobart archdiocesan chancellor Fr Terry Rush, who was administrator of St Mary’s Cathedral during Archbishop D’Arcy’s time in Hobart, described his former boss as “very intelligent, gentle and generous”.
