USTRALIANS are being asked to help relieve a refugee crisis of ‘catastrophic’ proportions, emerging in Afghanistan as US bombing continues to pound the country.
Caritas Australia has launched a special appeal for Afghan refugees, pledging an initial $100,000 for its international body’s work in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Donations will help provide basic needs for refugees and displaced people, such as water, food rations, temporary shelters, fuel, bedding, clothing and health care.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture has said the situation in Afghanistan is catastrophic, with 7.5 million people “extremely vulnerable” and virtually the entire population of 23 million facing a food shortage.
