A NEW women’s organisation will use a Brisbane conference this month to rally support for a national push to dramatically reduce Australia’s abortion rate of 90,000 a year.
Melinda Tankard Reist, a speaker at the “Pro-Woman and Pro Life” forum organised by the new national women’s organisation, Women’s Forum Australia (WFA), said the group was calling for a national change on the abortion issue.
The forum, to be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 25 at 7.30pm, aims to bring together women who are concerned about abortion and its impact on women and children, and those who want to contribute to the debate and achieve positive change.
Women’s Forum Australia is an independent think tank, which conducts research, education and public policy development on social, economic, health, and cultural issues that affect women.
Ms Tankard Reist said WFA was launched this year following the inaugural “Pro-woman, Pro-life” event in Sydney last December, which was attended by almost 800 women.
Speakers at the Brisbane forum include president of the NSW Branch of the Australian Labor Party Senator Ursula Stephens, Queensland Shadow Minister for Women Fiona Simpson, Family First Victoria state chairman Susan Fielding, University of Western Sydney School of Law lecturer Katrina George and many women sharing their stories about abortion and mothering against the odds.
