A RARE sculpture of a pregnant Virgin Mary is the latest creation of Brisbane artist Mardi Kearney.
The sculpture, weighing more than one tonne, was commissioned by Marist Brother Michael Green of St Augustine’s College, Cairns.
Br Green saw one of Mrs Kearney’s sculptures in the grounds of St Peter Claver College, Riverview and told her that one day he would commission her to do a sculpture for his college.
Br Green said he wanted a statue of an inviting Mary, with a look on her face like she had some Good News to tell.
He said the statue, which will stand outside the college chapel, was an unusual depiction of the Virgin Mary but thought it was a beautiful one.
Mrs Kearney, who lives at Riverview, in Brisbane’s west, said it took nine months to complete the life-size statue and said it felt like she had delivered it herself.
