TO the parents of little Alyssa Nolan, the separated twin whose battle for survival dominated headlines 12 months ago is a living testimony to the power of prayer.
On May 3, Alyssa celebrated her first birthday with a cake as big as her, while smiling and giggling at all the attention during a packed media conference at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.
For the Nolans, from the northside suburb of Bald Hills, and those who have been with them on an emotional rollercoaster ride over the past year, this was a milestone of great significance.
Sadly, Alyssa’s sister Bethany, who was conjoined at the head, did not survive a life-or-death operation three weeks after the twins’ birth.
But Bethany was not forgotten during the birthday celebrations at the Nolan home last weekend.
Speaking to The Catholic Leader at their home afterwards, proud parents Shaun and Mary told of the two daughters who have brought them a new perspective on life.
