ORGANISERS of Brisbane’s annual Corpus Christi procession aim to take it to the streets of the city next year after more than 1500 people took part on June 13.
A spokeswoman for the organising committee, Bernadette Gee, said the hope of returning the procession to the streets was raised with Pope John Paul II on June 10 declaring that October 2004 to October 2005, would be a special Year of the Eucharist.
Auxiliary Bishop Brian Finnigan of Brisbane, who led the procession at Nudgee Junior College, Indooroopilly on June 13, spoke of the Pope’s declaration when he addressed the crowd.
Mrs Gee said the committee believed the Pope’s declaration could encourage more people in devotion to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
She said the committee hoped next year’s procession, because it will fall in the Year of the Eucharist, will attract a bigger crowd.
This year’s event drew people from around Brisbane.
Mrs Gee said there were many families with children among the crowd and many young people.
About 40 young people made a public pledge, including a commitment to go to Mass every Sunday.
