Peace to all: Fr John Grace

A Christmas Message from Rockhampton Diocese

THE death of Nelson Mandela opened the eyes of the world to appreciate and recognise his triumphant life.

His achievements are not a collection of earthly goods but a vast panorama of commitments to justice and truth.  These treasures are born of a brave and courageous heart.

Peace which lasts far exceeds the balance of conflicting powers.  The oppressed can be released and returned to freedom.

Mandela is striking testimony to that oscillation. His prevailing integrity claims honour.

Jesus, the Child born in Bethlehem, is described as the Prince of Peace.  This peace flows from faith and love, sentiments and convictions of the human heart, mind and spirit. The gift satisfies good human desires but collapses when they slide.

Wanderings from Christian commitment casts dark shadows. The Royal Commission uncovers incredible pain, which seeks radical purification.

Christmas is a time of humbly grasping the compassionate ways of a loving Saviour, extending and embracing forgiveness. Because of Emmanuel (God with us), the Church lives in the hope of peace and goodwill. Light shines through darkness.

I wish you the blessings of a happy, holy and joyous Christmas.

FR JOHN F GRACE
Diocesan Administrator of Rockhampton.
